Republic Strike Updates

Trash & Recycling Update – September 3, 2025

The unionized workers who work for the City’s trash contractor, Republic Services are still on strike, as they have been since the beginning of July, and impacting trash, recycling and yard waste services in Watertown.

The City of Watertown’s curbside trash, B-week recycling, and yard waste pickup, provided by Republic Services, continues this week on a holiday schedule.

Wednesday curbside pickup begins tomorrow, Thursday, September 4, 2025. Scheduled pickups will continue one-day later this week, with Friday pickup scheduled to happen on Saturday.

Pickups are continuing to take longer than normal, and we appreciate your patience. Please continue to leave your bins on the curb if your scheduled pickup was missed this week and wait to report a missed pickup for 48 hours due to the anticipated delays.

After two days, if your bin is still at the curb and has not been emptied, please report a missed pickup by calling 311, SeeClickFix, or the Watertown MA App.

The City is also offering a drop-off center located at 148 Waltham Street, on Monday-Friday, from 7:30am-3:30pm. Here residents can dispose of household trash, recycling, and yard waste that does not fit in your bins. Please limit your drop off to three bags or the equivalent of trash, recycling and/or yard waste. Please be prepared to verify Watertown residency by showing a license or utility bill.

Our regular recycling center remains closed during the strike.

Bulk items, such as furniture, oversized household items, and mattresses, are not collected by Republic Services or accepted at the emergency drop-off center. Please visit watertown-ma.gov/republicstrike to learn of options for disposing of these items, and to remain up to date with the latest updates regarding service.

Please continue visit this page for the latest information regarding the strike. The City will continue to post updates here as they become available.
